Academics
continued
Academic Standing
The College has established standards for academic standing that
apply to all students (matriculated and non-matriculated) as follows:
To maintain good academic standing, students must:
w
Successfully complete a minimum of 50 percent of the credits
attempted each semester with a grade of "C" or higher and
w
Be progressing at a rate that assures a grade point average
of 2.0 over the total number of credits in the
program (major/majors).
Students who fail to satisfactorily complete more than 50 percent of
the credits for which they are registered will be placed on academic
warning. After two semesters of academic warning, the student will
be placed on academic probation. Failure to maintain satisfactory
academic progress while on probation will result in academic
suspension.
Those students wishing to appeal this decision must do so in
writing to the Dean of Academic Affairs prior to the first day of
registration for the following semester.
A student's credit completion rate will be reviewed after the student
has attempted 12 or more total credits. The first 12 credits attempted
are included in the total credit completion rate calculation.
Academic Amnesty
Students whose initial experience at SCC was unsuccessful are
given an opportunity to resume their academic careers with the
academic amnesty policy.
Students must meet the following criteria:
w
not be enrolled for a period of two consecutive years,
w
not be previously granted amnesty and
w
returned to SCC and completed at least 12 or more college-
level credits with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
Students who meet these criteria must:
w
meet with a Student Affairs advisor and file a "Request for
Academic Amnesty" form and
w
request a copy of their transcript be forwarded with the "Request
for Academic Amnesty" form to the Office of Academic Affairs.
Academic amnesty cannot be granted for coursework that has
been used to satisfy degree requirements.
Final approval for academic amnesty is granted by the Provost
Chief Academic Officer. Students are notified in writing of the
decision. If granted amnesty, all grades earned attributable to the
identified amnesty period are changed to "W" and the GPA is reset
to 0.0. Students may apply only one time for academic amnesty.
Attendance
Faculty Members
In the event a faculty member is late for class, students must
remain in class at least 15 minutes after the time the class is
scheduled to begin.
Student Attendance Policy
Regular and prompt attendance in all classes is expected of
students. Students absent from class for any reason are
responsible for making up any missed work. Faculty members
establish an attendance policy for each course and this policy is
documented on the course syllabus. It is the student's
responsibility to honor and comply with that policy.
Graduation Requirements
To fulfill graduation requirements, students do the following:
1.
Complete all specified curriculum requirements.
2.
Achieve a final cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
3. Fulfill all departmental and/or program requirements as
designated in their program of study when first enrolled in
the program.
4.
Pay the required graduation fee and meet all other financial
obligations to SCC.
5. File an application for graduation with the Dean of Student
Affairs by the established deadline.
Students who fail to file a petition by the deadline cannot be
