CHM 130 Basic and Organic Chemistry 2:2:3
Teaches students the basic principles of inorganic and organic chemistry.
Students learn the theory as well as solve mathematical problems involving
atomic theory, conversions, measurements, density, specific heat, nomenclature,
types of reactions, stoichiometry, gasses, and acids and bases. Emphasis is
placed on organic chemistry applications, as well as some biology
applications. The laboratory portion of the class uses manipulative techniques
to reinforce the lecture portion. Students learn the types of glassware used in
a chemistry lab. The course is taught using lecture, discussion, problem
solving, demonstrations, and manipulative and computer-based labs.
Prerequisite: Placement into MAT 095 and ENG 101 level
Offered: Fall
CHM 201 Organic Chemistry I 2:4:4
Is the beginning of a two-semester organic chemistry sequence. During this
semester, emphasis is placed on structure, nomenclature, bonding, molecular
properties, and stereochemistry of organic compounds. Greater detail, as
well as synthesis and reaction mechanisms, is stressed for alkanes,
cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes and alkyl halides. The laboratory portion of
the course reinforces the lecture by illustrating chemical reactions and
synthesis on a microscale as well as macroscale level. Basic organic chemistry
laboratory techniques -- such as determinations of boiling points and melting
points, recrystallizations, distillations and extractions -- are practiced.
Prerequisite: CHM 102
Offered: Fall
CHM 205 Organic Chemistry II 2:4:4
Is a continuation of CHM 201. It deals with the nature of organic
reactions, with an emphasis on synthesis. It also deals with the theoretical
aspect of spectroscopy, including NMR, IR, UV- Vis and Mass spectroscopy.
The laboratory portion of the course reinforces the lecture by illustrating
chemical reactions and molecular structure.
Prerequisite: CHM 201
Offered: Spring
Computer Graphic Art
CGA 101 Introduction to Computer Art 2:2:3
Uses the computer as a tool to draw, paint, scan and manipulate images.
Students create projects utilizing the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop,
Illustrator, InDesign) and PowerPoint. Additionally, students are introduced to
Dreamweaver software, used to create Web sites. This course, that includes
both lecture and lab projects, familiarizes students with these applications in
preparation for intermediate coursework. Color theory and principles of
design are also covered. This introductory course does not assume prior
drawing, painting, photography, computer graphic, or Web site creation
experience. However, familiarity with a Mac or Windows environment is
helpful.
Offered: Fall, Spring
CGA 110 Introduction to Digital Image Editing 2:2:3
Uses the computer as a tool to manipulate and edit raster graphics, otherwise
known as digital images. Photoshop and ImageReady, tools in the Adobe
Creative Suite which imitate traditional photographic techniques, are used.
Students also learn to use digital cameras and prepare images for use on the
World Wide Web. No prior photography experience is necessary.
Prerequisites: ENG 098, if required, and CGA 101 or written permission
of instructor
Offered: Fall, Spring
CGA 120 Desktop Publishing 2:2:3
Provides the basics of desktop publishing and computer layout design.
Utilizing InDesign, a computer layout program in the Adobe Creative Suite,
students learn to create a document, select fonts, format and edit text, and
import graphics. Good layout design and type design practices are
emphasized. Students also learn to scan, place, crop and manipulate
digital images in preparation for printing. Design projects may include type
design, logos, letterhead, envelopes, business cards, certificates, newsletters,
package design and fliers.
Prerequisites: ENG 098, if required, and any other CGA course or written
permission of instructor
Offered: Fall, Spring
CGA 132 Digital Illustration
2:2:3
Increases student skills needed for desktop publishing and Web page design
utilizing vector images. Basic design and layout concepts are reviewed.
Adobe Illustrator software is employed. Students learn to make and modify
shapes; draw using the pen and paintbrush; work with layers, paths, text
and masks; and prepare documents for printing. Before starting the course,
students should be familiar with opening graphic menus, scanning images,
storing and accessing files, and placing images into a graphics program.
Prerequisites: ENG 098, if required, and CGA 101 or written permission
of instructor
Offered: Fall
CGA 140 Web Page Design 2:2:3
Introduces the use of browsers, HTML and CSS coding, and Adobe
Dreamweaver software associated with designing page layouts for the
World Wide Web on the Macintosh platform. Correct design concepts for
Web page layout are taught. Students must have a working knowledge of
Adobe Photoshop prior to enrolling in this course in order to prepare
images for the Web.
Prerequisite: CGA 110 or written permission of instructor
Offered: Fall
CGA 142 Animation for the Web 2:2:3
Provides hands-on experience with Adobe Flash, a Web-authoring and
animation tool. Students create multimedia components and entire Web
sites that include graphics, sound, animation, and interactivity such as may
be found in interactive games, greeting cards, information kiosks and maps.
Students will use both graphical controls and ActionScript to manipulate
the component parts of their projects. A working knowledge of Adobe
Photoshop is required.
Prerequisite: CGA 110 or written permission of instructor
Offered: Spring
CGA 150 Digital Video Editing 2:2:3
Enables students to produce high-quality movies for video, multimedia and
the Web using Final Cut Express, LiveType, GarageBand, Quicktime and
iDVD. Fundamentals of videography, the treatment, storyboard, file
formats, file compression and software tools will be presented. Students
capture video, import still images, mark and edit source clips, play edited
clips and work with audio tools, filters, and transitions. The finished videos
are burned (recorded) on a DVDR for multimedia presentations on either a
Windows or Macintosh platform.
Prerequisite: CGA 110 or written permission of instructor
Offered: Spring
Computer Science
CSC 115 Computer Applications 3:0:3
Provides a general introduction to the objectives of the course; computer
hardware and the Windows operating system; database use; the efficient
and business-like use of electronic spreadsheets, word processing, and
computerized presentations; and other applications. Extensive hands-on
training is the primary mode of instruction used in this course.
Prerequisite: ENG 098, if required, or placement into ENG 101
Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer
